Sunglasses Trends Through the Decades

3,767 total views, 2 today

Sunglasses styles have continued to change throughout the years. From oversized silhouettes on Jackie Kennedy to ultra-thin frames in the 90s, the trends evolve over time.

While sunglasses weren’t popularized until the 20th century, there are prototypes of sunglasses dating back to the Roman Empire when Nero would watch gladiator fights through glasses made of polished gems. However, it wasn’t until sunglasses were inexpensively produced in 1929 that people began to incorporate them into their everyday lives.

The trends of the time often took style cues from popular movies and the stars. From cult movie classes to feminist icons, there are often clear moments in pop culture that helped cement a trend of the decade.

Because fashion works in a cyclical motion, we often find trends having resurgences from decades ago, suddenly sprouting a new relevance. As you read about the trends over the years, you’ll recognize many of these from their third or even fourth time around the trend cycle.

Viva Magenta: The Best Glasses in Pantone’s Color of the Year

2,847 total views, 0 today

Every December, Pantone announces a color for the upcoming year. Not only is the color meant to be a prediction for trending palettes, but the hue also reflects what is happening in the world around us. And this year, it’s bold Viva Magenta.

Pantone went on a journey to get to this color. After a year of chaos and upheaval in 2020, Pantone started the next year by announcing Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a marriage of gray and sunshine yellow to convey the message of strength and hopefulness that feels enduring and uplifting.

Jump to 2023, and we get what Pantone called “An unconventional shade for an unconventional time.”

Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. In a year where conversations around artificial intelligence are omnipresent, it’s no surprise that this is also 2023’s Pantone Color of the Year. The shade itself was selected by human trend prognosticators who survey fashion, then interpreted by the A.I. tool to create a new ecosystem to be explored, aptly named “the Magentaverse.” Pantone also released various images of this make-believe world, of course dripping in the vivid magenta hue.
