5 Makeup Tips for Wearing Glasses

If you wear glasses, it’s easy to feel like your makeup routine doesn’t matter because you can hide behind your specs. There’s no need to retire your favorite makeup looks because of your glasses!

Although it may feel like you’re hiding behind your frames, glasses actually bring attention to your face. We’ve gathered 5 tips to incorporate into your makeup routine to complement your frames while enhancing your natural features. You can take your makeup to the next level with just a few of these points.

1. Go bold

When rocking frames, you can actually go a lot bolder with makeup. You may think you’re wasting your time on eye makeup because nobody can see with your glasses—but you’re wrong. Don’t be afraid to go bolder on the eyeshadow (or liner) especially when it comes to thicker, darker frames.

And don’t forget to experiment. The color of your glasses can actually complement your eyeshadow and liner to make more of a statement. Golds, browns, and tortoiseshells frames complement earth tone eyeshadows, and neutral frames like greys, and blacks will ground any colorful eye makeup you apply.

2. Invest in an eyelash curler

Curling your eyelashes and using lengthening mascaras will open up your beautiful bright eyes behind your frames. Opt for smudge-proof mascara for really long eyelashes so it doesn’t run off onto your lenses.

Eyeliner is essential when it comes to wearing glasses and the thicker the frames, the thicker liner you can get away with. If you have chunkier frames, consider wearing eyeliner on the top and bottom but try to stay close to the lash line when applying.

3. Keep your eyes (and under eyes) bright

Glasses frames naturally cast a shadow on your face (especially darker frames) so don’t skip the concealer in your makeup routine. If you’re not going bold on the shadow, consider brighter tones on the eyes.

Look for a shadow near your skin tone with a subtle shimmer for an everyday shadow that will naturally brighten your face. For another trick to open your eyes, apply white eyeliner to your waterline. This makes your eyes appear brighter and makes you look more awake.

4. Use a pressed powder

Your glasses will cause your makeup to rub off especially around your nose. Set your makeup with setting powder (or setting spray) when you’re finished with your makeup process. This will prevent your foundation from transferring off wherever your glasses touch your skin and will ensure your makeup stays put all day long.

5. Consider balance

If you’ve got a bold pair of frames, don’t be afraid to pair with a striking lip! A neutral pair of thick frames will anchor a strong lip color. If you’re rocking bolder glasses in neutral colors, keep your eyes more subtle and bring color to your face in your lips and cheeks.

For colored chunky frames, go for bold eye makeup in neutral color palettes. You don’t want your eye makeup to clash with your colored glasses so opt for a base shadow that matches the lightest skin tone on your face and build from there.

Wearing glasses doesn’t mean you have to change your entire makeup routine, but you should adjust it to work the new sense of balance on your face.
